Trustees and Patrons


Patron: Katherine Jenkins
World famous
mezzo-soprano renowned across the globe as one of the biggest selling classical music artists of all time. Katherine has been a long standing supporter of Kidney Wales. Her first official engagement with Kidney Wales was starting our HSBC Cardiff 10K and 2K Runs on Sunday, September 7, 2008.



Patron: Nicole Cooke MBE
Wales first Olympic gold medalist in more than 30 years, Nicole Cooke is the world's number one female cyclist. The BBC Sports Personality of the Year finalist won gold at the Beijing Olympics and is already a legend even though she is still just 25. Nicole has had a long standing association with Kidney Wales and is one of 2009's Walk for Life Ambassadors.



Patron: Gerald Davies CBE DL
Writer and Journalist. Former Chairman of HTV Wales and The Wales Youth Agency. Rugby Legend played for Wales and British Lions.




Patron: Amanda Protheroe-Thomas
Amanda is the most versatile TV Celebrity - she stars in Hot Houses and various activity shows. Amanda has  supported KW for many years, giving her time for free to support our events and help raise awareness for the families across Wales who are waiting for a life saving transplant.



Patron: Catrin Finch
World famous Classical Musician, from 2000 to 2004 Catrin was the Royal Harpist to the Prince of Wales. Regularly appearing all over the World, Catrin has done more than anyone else to put the Harp on the musical map. Catrin recently appeared at the KW Millennium Concert, giving her to time to help raise much needed funds for patient care.



Patron: Max Boyce

Singer and comedian who rose to fame in the United Kingdom during the mid-1970s with an act that combined musical comedy with his passion for rugby union and his origins in the mining communities of South Wales. Having sold more than two million albums in a career spanning four decades,



Patron: Baroness Gale of Blaenrhondda

has been involved in women's issues all her working life. She was first involved as a Labour Party member, in the Women's Section of the Party. Later, from 1976 to 1999 she worked full time for the Labour Party, first as the Women's Officer for Wales, and from 1984 as the General Secretary for Wales - retiring from the post in 1999, and was appointed a life peer in 1999


Patron: Tim Rhys-Evans
Tim is the founder and music director of BBC 1 Last Choir Standing winners Only Men Aloud!. The choir performed at Kidney Wales' 2008 Reflections carol service and over the years have supported Kidney Wales at many of its events. Tim says the choir is looking forward to doing lots more for the charity in 2009.

Alex is a familiar face for S4/C viewers, having presented various shows such as ‘Hip Neu Sgip’, ‘Popty’ and ‘Tocyn’. She has been involved with the Kidney Wales Foundation for some time having participated in our Cardiff 10K run and Walk for Life.

As a charity that is often in the news either in its role supporting patients, encouraging people to get active through the Walk for Life and Cardiff 10k or to acknowledge the efforts of fundraisers from all parts of Wales, Kidney Wales has always stood out for me. I have been involved with the charity for some time, participating in various events such as the Cardiff 10k, the annual Carol Concert and, last year, hosting the Walk for Life Gala Dinner and am therefore thrilled to become an official patron.”

He spent his early working life running the family farm near Castle Caereinion, Welshpool  on which he was born and in which still has a business interest. He now lives at Cil Farm, Berriew. Davies takes an active interest in a wide range of sports, gardening, and other countryside activities.

His political career spans over three decades, as councillor and Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats on Cardiff City Council between 1983–1996 and joint leader of the Council from 1987 to 1991; he was elected to the National Assembly for Wales in 1999 and re-elected in 2003 and 2007.

Dr David Rees Lloyd (known as Dai Lloyd) (born in Tywyn, Gwynedd, 2 December 1956) is a Welsh politician.  He was the Plaid Cymru National Assembly for Wales Member for South Wales West from 1999 to 2011.

Nicholas Henry Bourne is a Welsh Conservative politician. He served as the Leader of the Welsh Conservative Party and as a member of the National Assembly for Wales for the Mid and West Wales electoral region from August 1999 until May 2011




Trustees of Kidney Wales Foundation

Chief Executive Roy J. Thomas
Roy has been involved in Kidney Wales directly and indirectly for over 23 years and became a Trustee in 2001 and Chairman in 2004. He is a lawyer and his fundraising for charities has included running marathons in London, Paris and Chicago and organising other events in Wales.



Chairman: Raj Aggarwal OBE DL

A Community Pharmacist, Board Member of National Pharmaceutical Association (NPA), and member of various local pharmaceutical and health committees. Past Chairman of the Asian Society of Wales. Winner of the Health and Beauty Retailer 2003 award. Awarded OBE in June 2007.



Vice Chairman: Dr Richard Moore
Consultant Nephrologist and Clinical Director of Renal Services and Transplantation at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.




Professor John Salaman
Professor John Salaman is a retired Professor of Transplant Surgery. He was Director of the Renal Transplant Unit at the Cardiff Royall Infirmary.




Dr Mick Kumwenda
Associate Specialist in Nephrology at Glan Clwyd Hospital, he joined the Board of Trustees in Autumn 2005.




Eirlys Hatcher

Mother of two children, one of whom has had a kidney transplant. She joined the BBC 27 years ago, during that time she has worked on a variety of programmes. Currently working as a Producer on S4C's long running soap - Pobol y Cwm.

Argiris is Consultant Transplant Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales

Ian is a Pharmacist and successful busisness man from North Wales who is passionate about improving kidney patient care and well-being for families in Wales.

Andrew is a new Trustee and has lived in Cardiff since 1999. He is a Chartered Accountant with BPU.  His audit training has provided Andrew with a good understanding of risk-mitigation and governance issues which he hopes can be of particular benefit to Kidney Wales.
